Can you please introduce yourself, tell us your name and your role at Uncommon?
Hi, I’m Kieran Matheson and I’m the Food & Beverage Supervisor at Uncommon.
What career path led you to this position? What have you done before joining Uncommon?
I studied Chemical Engineering for 3 years and after university I worked in the F&B department of a 4* Hotel called the Runnymede on Thames. I have always had a keen interest in all things coffee so decided to apply for the Barista role at the newly opening Uncommon Fulham. Since then, I have helped in the opening of the Uncommon Liverpool Street Café and have continued to develop my career within the company.
Can you describe your role and what an average day looks like for you?
I assist site managers in overseeing the day to day running of all our Uncommon coffee shops and any weekly members events. I am involved in the training of all our baristas. On a daily basis, I need to make sure all the coffee shops are fully stocked, I ensure all duties of the F&B assistants are being carried out to a high standard and I also plan implementation of new exciting products or services to our members.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is getting good feedback from our members. Whether it be the quality of our coffee or their enjoyment at one of our monthly members events.
What advice would you give someone who’s considering a similar role?
Try to be knowledgeable about all areas of the role, the skills will come with practise.
What do you enjoy most about working from Uncommon spaces?
Learning new skills where I can and continuing to improve the quality of service each site can offer. The team I work with is pretty great too!

What’s your go to productivity hack?
If I’m having to work on my computer for an extended period of time, taking short regular breaks always helps. Sometimes simply getting up to make a tea or coffee helps!
What’s your favourite way to unwind after a busy day and what are you passionate about outside of work?
I am passionate about good food, coffee and alcohol outside of work too. So going for a drink with with friends on a Friday or discovering a new café over the weekend is always nice. I also love to get out of London and ride my mountain bike.
