World Coffee Day – Uncommon café Highbury: Meet Maggie

Happy International Coffee Day! We all know coffee isn’t just a caffeine-kick. It’s a drink for when you want to catch-up with your friends at your favourite local boutique café, to warm you up on a winter day or to drink iced during a heatwave. It’s a drink that brings us together, no matter where in the world you are. It’s a shared love language, so it’s only right that we have a day dedicated to it.

There are a few coffee days throughout the year. There’s one on September 29th and one on October 1st – the perfect mark to start-up the Autumn Season. Our philosophy at Uncommon is that it’s coffee day, everyday.

One of the great benefits of having a membership at Uncommon is that we understand coffee culture better than most. Each Uncommon workspace houses its own café, offering incredibly high-quality coffee by Assembly Coffee, alongside healthy snacks and drinks.

Here is our interview with Maggie, who is the Barista at Uncommon Highbury & Islington.

Tell us a little bit about your background F&B background, and how your journey led up to Uncommon

I previously worked for Pret A Manger, therefore I already had experience in the food and coffee industry. I decided to continue my path and as an F&B Assistant. I came across Uncommon and was pleased to be accepted

What is your favourite part about the Uncommon café and your role?

My favourite part of my role for sure is contact with members. Our daily chats when they telling me what’s going on in their life or how the company is getting on. Knowing them by name, and fact all of them know me by name too create this friendly bond.

What is the most popular coffee order at Highbury?

The most popular drink in Highbury is an oat flat white, small and strong – just like me!

What is your favourite drink to make? Any tips you can share on making the perfect cup?

My favourite drink to make is an iced matcha latte. The reason is because of how pretty the drink looks after pouring it into transparent tall glass over milk and ice.

Do you know any interesting/unusual facts about coffee you’d like to share with us?

I always like the story as to how people discovered coffee beans and their properties. The story lead back to ancient coffee forest on the Ethiopian land.  The story goes that Kalid (shepherd) discovered coffee when he noticed that after eating the berries from a certain tree, his goats became so energetic that did not want to sleep at night!

And how do you like to take your coffee?

I like drinking an Americana/filter with coconut milk.
