You won’t notice us. But we’re always here in the background. Making sure you have everything you need. Helping you focus. Calmly supporting the every day. Uncommon People is a series to introduce you to the people who help make Uncommon thrive each and every day. Get to know us…

Can you please introduce yourself, tell us your name and your role at Uncommon?
My Name is Oliver Reddick (Ollie) and I’ve been the General Manager at Uncommon Borough for just under two years.

What career path led you to this position? What have you done before joining Uncommon?
I spent 10 years working within the retail industry, from high street fashion to luxury travel retail and finally working at Harrods within luxury designer fashion. Throughout my career, I’ve managed large teams, multi-million-pound turnovers and worked with some of the most exclusive brands in the world.

The best thing about working in retail is the people you meet along the way, be that colleagues or customers, so when looking for my next challenge I wanted to find a role that incorporates building relationships with people.

Can you describe your role and what an average day looks like for you?
As a General Manager I’m responsible for all daily operations of Uncommon Borough space and providing the highest level of service for our members. I also look after sales, events, facilities, occupancy levels, budgets, team learning and development. No two days are the same which is the appealing side of the role for me.

In one day; I can be in a forecasting meeting, a P&L review, host a few sales tours, meet members for coffee and plan an event.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
The majority of our members here in Borough are made up from SMEs so it’s great to see their growth and be part of it by supporting their teams and providing the best workspace for them to thrive in.

What advice would you give someone who’s considering a similar role?
Have confidence, be organised and always network. Be a confident leader and get to know you team inside out as they are the key element to any success. Establish the best processes to get organised and always review these to ensure you’re boosting productivity. Always continue to build on your professional network with everyone you meet as you never know what or who you might need in the future.

What do you enjoy most about working from Uncommon spaces?
I love the design and style of each space. Seeing how much work and thought goes into creating it makes you appreciate it even more. What really attracted to me to Uncommon is the focus on wellbeing and sustainability that we champion, as these are personal interests of mine.

Have confidence, be organised and always network

What’s your go to productivity hack?

My Leuchtturm1917 dotted page notebook. Keeping all my notes and to-do lists in one place is vital to me. I’ve tried several apps but have never been able to keep them up and always fall back to a notebook. There is just something very satisfying about writing with a pen on paper. After reading about Bullet Journal’s as a planner I gave it a go and have never look back. I love that it allows you to create your own personalised planner which really helps to maintain the habit. I start every month with a to-do list of things I would like to achieve. I then create a daily to-do list every evening. If I don’t have my notebook handy, I use the notes app on my iPhone, but I always transfer those back to the notebook.

What’s your favourite way to unwind after a busy day and what are you passionate about outside of work?
I love listening to music and use it to unwind every day. My big passion is travel. I love to learn about and experience different cultures and I spend a lot of time planning future trips and researching where to go next. For an alternative city break my most recent recommendation would be Kiev in Ukraine and for a summer getaway the beauty of Slovenia beats Italy for me.
