Can you please introduce yourself, tell us your name and your role at Uncommon?
Mark Gemmell – Client Experience Manager at Uncommon Fulham.
What career path led you to this position? What have you done before joining Uncommon?
My career originally began working in Sports PR, from there I found myself in retail for over 4 years. Initially at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships with Ralph Lauren, from there I assumed an Assistant Managers role at Abercrombie & Fitch where I was based on Savile Row for 2 years. I moved then up the road to Kate Spade on Regent Street as the stores Operations Manager.
Can you describe your role and what an average day looks like for you?
To describe the average day in the life of a CEM I need to use a cliché (in an extremely positive way) – no day is the same. However ultimately you are responsible for the overall client experience. From sales tours, inducting new clients, hosting events (pre COVID) to ensuring clients have a sufficient volume of biscuits for the respective meetings and this is not to be taken lightly!
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Seeing a client’s growth within your building. Here at Fulham, many of our clients are taking office space for the first time. Seeing them progress and grow as a company is incredibly rewarding.
What advice would you give someone who’s considering a similar role?
Be prepared to be adaptable, the role covers all facets of client experience. Learn how to present in front of clients, hold challenging conversations while maintaining a positive relationship, have a commercial eye for opportunities. This will all stand you in good stead and allow you to be successful in the role.
“Uncommon has had a gravitational pull on some extraordinary and brilliant clients that are truly inspiring”
What do you enjoy most about working from Uncommon spaces?
Meeting people from completely different industries that you would rarely find in any other job. Uncommon has had a gravitational pull on some extraordinary and brilliant clients that are truly inspiring.
What’s your go to productivity hack?
Follow up every verbal conversation with an e-mail, you can have multiple conversations throughout the day/week. Following up with e-mail communication provides you with a tangible asset to build on or solidify what was discussed.
What’s your favourite way to unwind after a busy day and what are you passionate about outside of work?
To be honest, I’m a sucker for a gym session. I’d be lying if I didn’t find it the perfect tool to switch off from the outside world. It’s my ‘me time’ that allows me to focus on me. Pop in my headphones and I’m good to go! Other than this, love a stroll with a podcast and a coffee. Something light hearted mostly.
