Uncommon People: Emily Coates

You won’t notice us. But we’re always here in the background. Making sure you have everything you need. Helping you focus. Calmly supporting the every day. Uncommon People is a series to introduce you to the people who help make Uncommon thrive each and every day. Get to know us…

Can you please introduce yourself, tell us your name and your role at Uncommon?
Hello, My name is Emily Coates and I am the General Manager of Uncommon Liverpool Street.

What career path led you to this position? What have you done before joining Uncommon?
Before I started working at Uncommon, I worked as a Navigational Officer in the super yacht industry for 8 years. I thoroughly enjoyed it – I had a chance to work with such fantastic crews and got to see some of the most amazing landscapes in the world. I wanted to transfer to shore and start a new phase of my life that is just not possible at sea, and the opportunity to build and lead the team at Uncommon’s flagship location came up. I couldn’t think of better challenge with such transferable skills from my previous career.

Can you describe your role and what an average day looks like for you?
Each day in this role is completely different to the next. I can be meeting with members and talking about office expansions, on a conference call with other general managers discussing new business wide processes, changing over meeting rooms, inspecting the building facilities or hiring a new team member. It can sometimes seem like a lotto!

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
I truly enjoy helping clients with whatever they need and seeing their enjoyment and satisfaction from receiving great customer experience. The nature of working for a young and growing company means that no day is the same and the learning never stops, which is invaluable.

I feel very honoured to lead a team of clever and hardworking people and to see them succeed is very rewarding.

The Uncommon spaces are a fantastic environment to be in each day and I count myself very luck that this is my office!”

What advice would you give someone who’s considering a similar role?
Be organised from the start! It’s kind of like keeping as many plates spinning as you can without letting them stop. Ensure you have a great team working around you and prioritise them when you can because they are invaluable when the plates stop spinning.

What do you enjoy most about working from Uncommon spaces?
The spaces speak for themselves in how well designed they are, how they always smell great,  how there is always a space suitable for the work you wish to achieve. They are a fantastic environment to be in each day and I count myself very luck that this is my office!

What’s your go to productivity hack?
I don’t have a magic productivity hack but I believe that being organised and focused on your goals (the ones from your daily to-do list and the longer term ones) is the key.

What’s your favourite way to unwind after a busy day and what are you passionate about outside of work?
I am passionate about playing sports and have always played since I was a little girl. I currently play hockey for Battersea Wanders Hockey Club and social tennis with friends. My fiancé and I are avid kite-surfers and enjoy travelling around the world to all the sports hotspots.
